Types Of Computers

Computers are a part of our life, a very common part of it. There was a time when computers were operated by few connaisseurs, programmers or people that were working in related fields of activity. Nowadays, computers exist and are being used in almost every home, making life a little easier.

Whenever we buy a computer, we must take into consideration different things, one of them being the type of computer we wish to acquire. When it comes to types of computers, these can be defined as laptops, palmtops, desk computers, depending on their design and shape, and analog computers or hybrid computers, on the other hand, based on the operational principle.

The analog computer type is almost extinct these days. It differs from the digital computers by its capacity of performing very many mathematical operations simultaneously. The analog computers use continuous variables in mathematical computation. They operate on mechanical or electrical energy.

The hybrid computers are a combination of analog and digital computers. The digital computers work on the principle of binary system of 0 and 1 and have very precise results. The only problem with them is that they are too slow and are incapable of performing large scale mathematic operations. The hybrid types use the digital counterpart to convert the analog signals in order to perform robotics.

Another way of categorizing computers is according to their capacity. We have many types of computers based on the capacity.

The mainframe computers are machines used by large organizations such as statistic institutions or meteorological survey. These computers perform bulk mathematical computations. They are core computers and are used for computation operations performed by more than one hundred people at the same time.

Microcomputers, on the other hand, are usually called personal computers because they are in the public use. There are several microcomputer types: desktop computers, personal digital computers, towers, work stations, laptops and hand held computers.

Mini computers are used, like the mainframe computers, for business purposes. They can sustain the simultaneous work of up to one hundred users, and are used more in accounting and finances businesses.

There is a special type of computers: the supercomputers. They resemble somehow the mainframes and are used in operations of economic forecasts or in engineering designs. The technical difference between a supercomputer and a mainframe computer is that the supercomputer focuses on executing a few programs as fast as possible, whereas the mainframes execute many programs simultaneously.

Workstations are mainly used for engineering purposes. They are equipped with a large high-resolution graphics screen, 64 MB of RAM, usage interface. There are networking workstations, term that refers to whatever computer connected to a local area network.

A last category of computers we are presenting here are the servers. Servers are computers that deliver Web pages. With a simple installing of serving software on it and a connection to the internet, we can turn any computer into a server.
