Over the years I have tried many different computer desks, but only one type was to my satisfaction: the corner computer desk. The three main advantages of these desks are stability, armrest area and pleasant background if the desk is in fact put in a corner of the room.

Since monitor manufacturers have pretty much abandoned the standard VESA stand in low-end and mid-range products, it's essential to have a solid desk to put you monitor on. If the monitor moves even slightly as you type or move the mouse, then your eyes constantly have to refocus on the screen.

Corner Computer Desk (Source: officefurnitureanddesks.com)

In the picture above you see a very nice desk with screw-less design. All the pieces fit together with just gravity holding them in place. If the material is strong enough, then it's almost as stable as it was mounted on the wall.

On this specific desk model (the top cut in a circle) you get bit smaller armrest area than on a desk with a rectangular top, but it's still very practical and pleasant to work on. What you may notice is that there's no special place for the computer case, so you'd probably put it somewhere on the top of the desk. This is not a problem, unless your system is awfully loud and doesn't let you concentrate on your work/game.

If the corner desk is in the corner of the room, then you'll face the monitor and two flat walls, so nothing will distract you from working. This aspect however is psychological, as some people are bothered by bare walls. I guess there's nothing wrong with putting a few plants, bookshelves, posters, pictures…etc. on the wall, so the user will feel comfortable. Lately I have been using a simple computer desk on wheels and it sometimes bothers me to have half of the room behind the monitor. It makes me lose concentration.

Corner Computer Desk (Source: technabob.com)

The design in the picture above has the same problem, but I guess you could park it in a corner and pretend it's a corner desk. In fact this may be a perfect solution for some people, as mobility can also be just as important as stability. It has to do with the user's posture, as we humans cannot sit or stand in the same pose for a long time, because of our spine. The joints in the spine accumulate a lot of pressure if they stay in the same position for a long time and it could lead to serious health issues.

A computer desk that you can move around with could be the best solution for this problem.

Computer desks are usually part of an office or home furniture set, so usually it’s not the main item you base your decision on when you choose your furniture. These are unfortunate situations, because a cheap furniture set comes with a cheap computer desk that usually has at least one of the two major flaws: inaccessible computer case or wobbly structure (it wobbles as you type or move the mouse).

Stable stand-alone computer desks are hard to find. Your best bet is a desk which is built into a larger shelf and drawer structure.

In most cases corner desks are the most stable because they have adequate reinforcement elements in both directions. The desk< above has a very solid structure. Even if the keyboard/mouse drawer moves up and down a little as type or navigate, that movement isn’t transferred to the monitor (which would be the most annoying result). The monitor needs to be on a solid foundation because a constant wobbling will affect your eyes in time.

One of the worst cheap computer desk designs is the one with a weak structure, but also on wheels. This is amongst the cheapest computer desks available, but on a flexible laminated floor, which has 3-5mm of soft polystyrene under it, makes working on a computer more like an awkward dance. If you’re able to tolerate that, from the other point of view it’s a fine design. You have access to the front, side and also the back of the computer case, so you can easily pull out/plug in audio jacks or data cables and even install new internal components without taking the computer case out from under the desk. This specific desk (seen in the photo above) costs $135 at StacksandStacks.com.

Yes, this design has a lot of shelves, but the structure is based on a weak, hollow metal skeleton. An average computer weighs around 10kilos and the monitor at least another 5kilos, so based on the image provided by the store I would say that this desk would be extremely unstable even if its skeleton would be made of solid steel, because there’s no reinforcement at all sideways. The $88 price tag may be exaggerated for such a weak architecture.

This desk has very little legroom, but the back panel offers great structural stability. The only thing I don’t understand is why they have put the wheels so far from the strongest points of the base panel (where it meets the vertical panels). As a consequence the base panel may bend upwards where the wheels are, if you slightly press down on the desk. The $89 price tag seems fair for this particular computer desk.

Honestly I would be afraid to touch something like this. It’s made of thicker material, but lack a serious back panel which wouldn’t permit any sideways wobbling. On the other hand I have to admit that its very simple, yet practical design (you have full access to the computer case) makes it worth the $104 price required for purchasing it.

The desk on which the computer is used is almost as important as the computer itself. Some people may think that laptops can be operated in any conditions, but the truth is that for optimal productivity you need an ergonomic chair and desk in the appropriate height. After you’ve chosen an adequate desk, you may need some additional computer desk accessories to set up you work area just right. First of all it’s important to have the computer system at hand, so that you can insert disks very easily or take down the computer cases side if necessary. Unfortunately most standard computer desks are not designed for easy access, so you may need to take out one or two parts of the desk and install a Ziotek CPU Holder Under Desk Mount ZT1080150:
This smart little computer desk accessory can be mounted easily on any desk that has a horizontal panel. A few screws and you’re done. It can also slide to the front on the mounted rails (top part) and turn 180 degrees for total access to all cables and components. For only $36 it’s a very wise investment, because you’ll use it a lifetime. Even if a desk breaks, it can be mounted on the new one. For rooms without air conditioning SYBA made an USB Desk Fan:

It works with 5Volts maximum 500mA, permitted by the USB port’s limit, which means a maximum power consumption of 2.5Watts. Running the fan with your laptop when it’s on battery power shouldn’t create any problems.

It has four selectable speeds and it can be turned in a 180 degree angle, although simply placing it on the desk in the right direction shouldn’t be harder. For a 5volt fan the $16 price is acceptable, considering the fact that it’s also a green product (it consumes only 2.5Watts, when other similar desk fens that run on AC power can consume as much as 25-100Watts).

For just under $30 Luma Labs is offering a small LCD display, that connects through USB to any USB compatible computer and displays vital information non-stop:

It’s most useful in situations when you’re using windows without a page file (to increase reaction speed), and you want to see each program’s impact on system memory usage and/or their CPU utilization. Sometimes keeping the task manager or resource monitor on the screen is not really an option, maybe if you have more then one screens …

On-line shopping can sometimes prove difficult due to many verification procedures, but now SmartSwipe is available at only $80:

There’s no such thing as a 100% secure transaction, but this credit card reader adds a significant amount of security to your bank account and/or credit card, so you can shop without worry.

Before presenting some interesting computer accessories for kids, it needs to be said that today’s kids all over the world have no problems with standard computer keyboards, mice, touch pads and touch screens.

Many people don’t realize it, but all basic input/output devices were designed to be as simple as possible, so it’s no big surprise that even kids can easily use them.

As if standard keyboards weren’t simple enough, Sakar managed to simplify it even more:

The Crayola 11071 Keyboard is one of the best products from Sakar. The most important thing about it is that unnecessary keys were eliminated, and the rest is separated in appropriate groups by colors. This way any child will learn the differences between keys right from the start. By color it’s easier to differentiate numbers from letter, and signs from function keys.
Chester Creek Technologies has simplified the mouse, bringing it back to the first Apple mouse design with only one button. Apple’s one button mouse designed ~30 years ago for Macintosh computers looked very primitive:

Chester Creek Technologies Ctmo One-button Optical Tiny Mouse, designed for kids:

There isn’t much to say about this tiny mouse. It has a friendly exterior, and its basic functionality makes us realize that for many applications one mouse button is enough.

Other computer accessories designed for kids are not so practical, they are normal computer accessories with an exaggerated exterior.
The C-3PO MIMOBOT flash drive is a nice gift for kids (or for any Star Wars fan). It’s preloaded with Star Wars-themed bonus wallpapers, screensavers, avatars, sound software and more.

Personalized mouse pads are also appropriate gifts for kids and adults, although they also lack any practical advantages over a simple, mono color mouse pad. Early optical mice had a problem with mouse pads that had many colors, but the latest GLaser mice work flawlessly on any flat surface, even on transparent glass.

A more useful computer accessory would be a computer desk in the kid’s favorite color or the universal pink for girls:

Paired with an appropriate ergonomic chair:

This combination is appropriate for kids because the desk is lower than normal and it also has a bottom part that raises the floor by 10cm, so kids may rest their feet if they sit on an appropriate height chair. Some manufacturers also offer pink computer cases, if the pink chair and desk weren’t enough:

It’s basically a simple ATX form factor computer case, compatible with today’s most configurations. The manufacturer of these cases is Raidmax, a very serious brand known for gaming and server cases. On the official website the pink case is listed in the Corporate section, which is a bit odd. I can’t imagine serious programmers, web designers, accountants or bankers working on such machines.

Assuming that your room is rectangle-shaped, you may have up to four corners suited for a computer desk. There are a lot of corner computer desk designs, but you have to keep in mind that these are least practical and are mostly for decorative purposes.
There are many designs available, this one comes from the CRT screen era.

As you can see it’s a waste of space, a triangle shape space is inaccessible in the back, while even more space is unusable below the monitor. It would make more sense to use a simple desk parallel with one of the walls.

This design tries to make all space usable, theoretically you may also use the space behind the desk, in the corner, but all bets are off if you put something there that doesn’t fit the décor. Another unsuccessful attempt was made with this next design:

There isn’t enough space where to put your legs so you could use the keyboard comfortably and a huge part of the corner is also wasted. Another obvious design flaw is the height of the screen. Although there are some logical explanations (like improving posture) for placing it so high, it’s scientifically proven that the best position for any monitor or TV is under the horizontal line in which your eyes are. Looking slightly upward requires extra effort from your neck or eye muscles, and will result in constant discomfort.

This simple design is for three computers and it also doesn’t waste space. Placing the desktop computer systems up on the desk may cause some vibration problems, but for laptops this might be an almost perfect corner desk design.

Simple and yet very classy, without any space wasted this design may be the most appropriate to complete a traditional furniture set. It doesn’t leave any possibilities for harsh criticism.

Shiny chrome bars and round table parts look very nice, but this corner desk is almost 100% impractical. There’s no sliding shelf for the keyboard and no room for the user’s legs, while the monitor is also placed ridiculously high. Now let’s look at something very modern, with many adjustable shelves for keyboard, mouse, speakers …etc.

This is just perfect. Adjustable seat, shelves, armrests … a large screen. I can’t imagine anything missing from this setup. Simple and elegant design, but it has “wasted space” written all over it. The distance in the middle should be a little bigger so you could sit more comfortably with your legs straight, otherwise it’s a very acceptable design, it has a lot of storage space without any fancy parts that may create a chaotic impression even if your things are well-arranged.

I don’t know what the printer is doing right on the top, but the basic structure appears to be very solid. Of course replacing the CRT with an LCD will give you more space on the desk for the keyboard and mouse. The best thing about this design is that it doesn’t have any vertical sides, letting you move things around and even change parts of the pc without having to remove all the cables.
