Rocketfish Computer Accessories

Rocketfish is a well known computer accessory manufacturer that sells its products mostly in Canada and the US. It doesn’t have a big variety of different versions of the same product type, because every accessory is very well designed, so it suites most users.

The Rocketfish 550-Watt ATX CPU Power Supply addresses mainstream compute configurations. 550Watts are enough for one high-end graphics card (like the Radeon 5870 = 27 – 188Watts), a Phenom II or Core i7 processor (95 – 140Watts), up to eight standard 3.5” desktop hard disks (6Watts each) and a few optical drives (15-30Watts each). The rest of the power will most likely be “lost” because it’s impossible to balance the system’s power consumption according to the power supply’s maximums on each rail/circuit, even if the power cables can be moved from one rail to another. The 5.5” silent Fan is a very nice feature, it may provide adequate cooling for the whole system even at very low speeds like 500RPM.

With a maximum power output of 90Watts it’s not really universal, because the strongest notebooks may require up to 200Watts of power, however most Core 2 Duo’s with only one graphics card installed should work fine. Rocketfish really outdid itself this time, this little power supply supports both AC and DC inpunts, so you don’t have to use a different adapter in the car and the extra USB charging port makes sure that no device remains without power. This USB port can also be used for external hard drives that require 2 ports to work, so the external rack will occupy only one USB port on your laptop.

Although sound cards are rarely put into the computer accessory category, Rocketfish designed one that does provides basic 5.1 sound output on any computer (at least Pentium 4 or Athlon XP) that has an empty PCI slot and uses a compatible operating system. Nowadays additional sound cards are rarely installed in new computers, because most of them already have very high quality on-board sound cards with 6-12 channel digital/analog inputs/outputs. Still, if you’re a big fan of Rocketfish or Creative (brand of the chip used on the card) this card may satisfy your taste at a reasonable price of only $30 at Bestbuy.
