Pink Computer Accessories

Whenever you read or hear about computer accessories, pink isn’t the first color that comes into mind. At first (when the first personal computers were introduced) no one dared to make accessories in different colors than black, white and other shades in between.

Unfortunately (or fortunately?) as the computer market expanded and all kinds of users were demanding accessories in different colors, forcing manufacturers to abandon classic PC accessory designs, and go for many different colors and shapes.

Some theories emerged recently about the color pink being inappropriate for children. There could be some truth to this hypothesis, but things are a bit more complicated than that. In the early 1900s pink color clothes were perceived to be appropriate for boys and blue for girls, however after 1930 this perception quickly changed. The exact opposite became the norm and it still is today.

Some commentators argue that the obsessive use of the color pink negatively affects the human brain, while psychologists can’t find any significant evidence that would suggest something like that. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle, meaning that not the color itself is harmful, but the way a girl is treated in a family where she’s not only surrounded with pink color toys, wallpapers and clothes, but she is also treated like a girl (with exaggerated femininity). These girls will probably grow up to be very superficial if they don’t reject the pink color at an early age (6 – 10 years old).

Pink computer accessories (or any other pink colored products) are probably safe for everyone, as long as the color is not used obsessively in the person’s surrounding. Today almost anything is available in pink, computers too:

I have to admit that they look a bit disturbing to me, but pink computer accessories are more tolerable if they are small.

In the picture you see two PowerPoint remote controls, an optical mouse and an external laptop cooling system, these are focused on users on the go, doing product demonstrations or other kinds of presentations.

The Hello Kitty computer microphone is surely aimed at young girls. Just for the fun of it, try to imagine a pink computer and monitor on the following table, placed in a pink room:

You can search all you want, but you won’t find any famous designer putting his/her name on a train wreck like that.

Even in this picture they had to put a lot of brown and white objects to make it look relatively acceptable to the human eye. Personally I have used computer accessories that had black, while, silver and blue parts.

It would be an interesting experiment to try a pink keyboard for more than a few seconds, although there’s no telling what my blogs would look like typed on something like this.
