Wallpapers are an easy way to customize the main screen of any digital device. For mobile phones and other hand held devices they usually have to be bought from an on-line store for prices around $1.

Before going into where and how to get free computer wallpapers it needs to be said that high resolution wallpapers (but low resolution ones too) take up a lot of system memory and sometimes need to be reloaded when a program closes and the background becomes visible again. This was mostly an issue when average computer systems had just a few megabytes of memory, but used almost the same resolution monitors and background images as today. On slow computers with minimal installed memory, just enough to run the operating system I strongly advise against using background pictures and visual effects.

I have to admit that the results are not quite what I expected, the big majority of the wallpapers displayed on google.com (image section) are very artistic and represent exceptional aesthetic value.

Photographs like this, taken in nature, are very relaxing to look at. If you don’t mind spending lots of minutes looking at it this (or something similar) may be the ideal background for your desktop. Pictures with patterns and blurry parts are best avoided, because looking at them just adds to the eyestrain usually suffered during work on the computer. Something like this may not have any artistic value, but speed and vehicle enthusiasts may find it very calming if it doesn’t have blurry parts of course. Dolphins are both beautiful and intelligent, so combined with a spectacular sunset, a picture like this depicts a very special part of nature, not accessible for just anyone.

Cute drawings from stories is another way to go, although they have fewer details to admire.

Whatever your taste dictates, there are a couple of things you should take under consideration. Choose wallpapers with the appropriate aspect ratio. For example cramming 4:3 images into 16:9 screens won’t have the desired result.

Resolution is also very important, you should always use high resolution (higher than the resolution of your monitor) pictures as background. Although more system memory is used this way, you don’t want your desktop looking like a satellite TV image during bad weather or solar flares.
