Computer Monitor Accessories

With the release of very high performance graphics cards from AMD and nVidia, computer monitor accessories are becoming more and more important to users.

nVidia’s cards come with a stereoscopic viewing option that needs a 120Hz monitor or HDTV and shutter glasses that has to be worn by the user for the technology to work. The glasses come with the Avatar  computer game and cost $199 on-line. This technology is nothing new, it simply gives different images to the left and right eye, by dividing the 120Hz (120FPS) into 60 right and 60 left with the help of the shutter glasses.

Although it may offer an interesting experience, it’s not recommended for everyday use, because it may cause irreversible damage to the human brain. Short term effects include disorientation or fainting, but using this technology long term may permanently damage depth perception. AMD released cards with a very different approach, it simply made cards with up to 6 outputs so up to 6 monitors can be connected and combined into one giant desktop. This technology is called Eyefinity and requires some additional computer monitor accessories. For two or three monitors you only need a wide desk that accommodates all monitors, but 4 or more monitors require a professional monitor stand:

To get the best results, it’s recommended to use monitors with very thin frames so the desktop area will be separated by the thinnest black lines possible. Another popular product mostly for the workplace or internet cafes is the privacy monitor filter.

This ingenious invention permits the user sitting right in front of the screen to see everything clearly, while people further away from the screen see only a black screen. Such computer monitor accessories may be useful in PC game clubs, where adversaries shouldn’t see each other’s screens. Old LCDs may still be enough for most applications and games, but their power supply probably didn’t survive all those years. For these situations one solution may be to connect the LCD (most of them use 12V, maximum 75Watts) to the computer’s power supply or buy a new LCD power supply for only $17:

For some reason monitor stands are also very popular. Many computer desks are designed with monitor stands, for the others it may be bought separately for only $18.

The most important thing to know about these stands is that the computer monitor has to be under your eye’s height, otherwise working on the computer may stress your eye muscles.

It’s not common knowledge that most LCD’s have fluorescent backlighting, only the latest models come with LED backlighting that are in a completely different category. For fluorescent backlit LCDs and fluorescent lit environments the Gunnar ST004-C001 eyeglasses offer a better contrast ratio on the screen and some protection against the less-healthy fluorescent light (compared to natural light and classic light bulbs).

They cost $80, but over time they make money by improving the wearer’s productivity and reducing the eye doctor’s bill.
